As a national transport operator, we recognise our environmental responsibilities and actively pursue ways to reduce the overall environmental impact of our business, well beyond basic legislative compliance. The improvements we make help our customers in fulfilling their environmental commitments too.
Today 100% of our fleet is either Euro 4 or 5 compliant. We purchase vehicles from new to take advantage of improvements in aerodynamics, engine technology and carbon and noise emissions and the average age of our fleet is just 12 months old. Vehicles are regularly serviced to ensure the fleet is performing to optimal efficiency at all times.
We also monitor fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by vehicle make, model and location and operate a continuous driver training programme to make improvements in these important areas. Drivers are set targets and are rewarded for fuel conservation. Our CO2 emissions have fallen every year since we started monitoring in 2007.
We strive to minimise the overall number journeys made. Carefully planning vehicles and loads means we dramatically reduce empty loads. We also we monitor any off-route running. Many moves are handled by rail, saving more road miles every year.
